American Running Company holds a mock-triathlon every year as a way to kick off the season. I really wish I’d known about it in years past, I cannot stress enough how well put together this event was. The course was easy to understand, the transition was set like any other sprint would be, and the ARC staff was really friendly. I went with a friend, Erika, who is running her first Triathlon in two weeks.
We got to the Dunedin Causeway at 7am. There were several racks for everyone to set their transition area. We racked our bikes, laid out our gear, and talked about all the race day what-ifs we could think of.
A little before 8am they gave a quick course talk…
Then instructed us to head down the beach for the swim start. We had the option to do a 1/2 mile or 1/4 mile swim. Erika and I decided to do the 1/2 mile. We were actually able to do the entire course together. With no wave times it was really nice to be able to enjoy the day with a buddy. It seemed like a lot of other athletes did the same.
The water was in the 70s and was absolutely the perfect temperature. No wet suit was needed… in March. Another one of the zillion reasons why I love Florida.
We all got in the water and one of the athletes yelled “ready, set, go!”. With that, I started my watch and got to swimming. I felt a lot more comfortable on the swim today than I have in the past. I think the laid back feel of the morning really set a great tone going into it. I also think my twice weekly morning swims at the pool gave me a little more confidence to brave the open water.
The bike course was two loops along the causeway. The roads were not closed but traffic was minimal.
The bike to run transition is always a weird feeling. Erika explained it as feeling like you’re running in sand. That’s probably the most accurate way I’ve ever heard it described. Even during a sprint, my legs just feel like lead coming off the bike. I usually get into a good stride about 2.5 miles into the run which, on a 3-mile run, doesn’t really do much for me. Note to self: do more brick workouts.

A super big congrats to Erika for completing her first triathlon-experience. Her attitude and excitement was inspiring. She is going to absolutely rock her race in a few weeks!
I would definitely reccomend this event (or one like it) to anyone wanted to get into the sport, get back into the sport or just shake out some nerves before a race.
