Cafe Bohemia & Cabaret

This weekend we tried a new restaurant that has been on “the list” of places to go for a while. We had tickets to freeFall theatre and this restaurant is on our way there. We figured it’d be a perfect night to try it.

Cafe Bohemia is in the Grand Central District of St. Pete. It’s a quirky little area just outside of Downtown. I’d been wanting to try it for a while. Let’s face it, anywhere with peanut butter frosted vegan cupcakes and tofu on the menu is a win in my book… or so I thought.

I ordered “The Oracle”, a black bean hummus wrap, with a side salad. Patrick got “The Bohemia”, a signature sandwich.

After we ordered the girl at the register said she had to go get the chef, who was sitting on the patio having a smoke. He made his way back into the kitchen and started our orders. This visit wasn’t starting out how I’d expected.

My food came out first. The side salad looked suspiciously like pita chips.

Patrick’s arrived about 10 minutes later.

I was starving by the time everything arrived. One bite into my wrap I realized the hummus wasn’t really as it was described on the menu. It had a really strong, spicy flavor that I just couldn’t get into.

I asked the girl working the register and she said she thought it had onion and garlic in it. If that was it, it must have been a lot. She offered to call the chef back in from the patio to prepare my something else but I honestly had lost my appetite by that point.

Patrick finished about half of his sandwich. After leaving he told me his tasted like it had been deep fried in butter and was just too heavy to eat anymore.

It breaks my heart to write such a negative review of this place. I had such high hopes for it and I love to support all things local. But, honestly, we just didn’t have a very good experience.

I ended up having a Cliff Bar on our way to the theatre…

After dinner we made our way to freeFall theatre, a fun little venue on Central Ave and 60th street. They usually have an interesting line up of shows.

This month they are playing one of Patrick’s favorites, Cabaret.

The theatre was set up in traditional Cabaret seating, complete with rotary phones on the table.

This was the first time I’ve seen Cabaret and I really enjoyed it. They have some awesome talent in this production.

Cabaret is playing though July 22nd. If you’re in the Tampa Bay area I would highly recommend seeing this show! Tickets really reasonable are available here.
