Patrick Post: Veg’n Out

There are always two different meals being cooked in our kitchen. Tori follows a vegan plant based diet and I… well, lets just say I do not.  But, for the month of February, I’ve decided to try and follow a vegetarian diet.

I tried this last year for a week and it while it seemed to go pretty well, I wanted to give it another go for an extended amount of time. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy going into it.  I am a meat and potatoes kind of guy and I love to cook. I especially love to grill, and a good burger is pretty much my favorite food.  But I am leaving all that behind for an entire month.

There wasn’t one specific reason I was inspired to try this. I didn’t feel I got the true perspective of a vegetarian lifestyle in just a week last year.  Everyone always says that once you stop eating meat you feel better, you feel “lighter” and cleaner and I want to see what everyone is talking about.  Not to say that I necessarily feel “gross” or “heavy”.

So the day before I embarked on this quest, I stuffed myself with all of my favorite meat meals.  I had Chick-fil-a for lunch and a burger for dinner with a side of marinated chicken breast.

So on February 1st, I said goodbye to meat for an entire month. Tori and I did some grocery shopping to get some new meal ideas for me.  I am going to try Veggie-burgers, lots of fruit and a heavy dose of salads to start.

Once I settle into the groove, I plan on trying new foods and cooking new meals but I wanted to stick with familiar food to get started.

Breakfast didn’t really change for me.  I typically eat a bagel with peanut butter and a glass of milk.

Lunch can be pretty simple too with pasta and peppers, veggie sandwiches and smoothies.

Dinnertime is where I’ll need to get a little creative.  I’ve made a mexi-wrap the past few nights, PB&J sandwiches with berries, a pesto panini, and salads.  I’m excited to start cooking and eating new things, I just need to figure out what they are.

I’m pretty excited to try this new “diet”.  There will definitely be a few challenges including getting enough protein for the amount of exercise I do. I’m also pretty sure Harvey is trying to sabotage me.

I have two races I will be traveling to and working between now and the end of the month so that could be interesting.

Overall, I think this is a great experiment and it will give me an insight on the challenges and joys of eating vegetarian.  I plan to post once a week so check back to see how it goes. Wish me luck and happy eating!

New Gear

Honestly, is there anything more motivating to get out there and sweat than new workout gear? It always works for me!

Let me start by saying, I feel like I’ve been having a shoe-identity crisis for the last few months.

I’ve been a loyal Saucony Kinvara runner since I trained for my first marathon. I must have gone through 10 pairs of them. Then last year, Saucony updated the shoe. I purchased a pair of the Kinvara 2 and right off the bat something felt different. I still can’t pinpoint exactly what the difference was but it wasn’t a right fit for me.

I even emailed Saucony to find out what the difference was and if there was another shoe that they would recommend based on the changes. I got this response:

“I have checked with our Product Development department.  The only changes between the Kinvara 1 and 2 is the mono mesh in the upper is more durable and breathable. Also, the cage under the mono mesh got extended into the forefoot to keep the toe box from synching up.”

That email left me even more confused. I decided while training for my last race to switch into a trail shoe.

I absolutely loved the New Balance Minimus trail shoe and it held up very well for the Croom 50k, however, I still wanted to find a new road shoe that would work for me.

After trying on a few pairs at my local running store I was talked into a Newton Light Weight Neutral Trainer. I’ve been talking about giving them a try for a while but was hesitant to make a dramatic switch until after my last race. Since I still have a little over a month before my next training program begins I felt that this would be a great time to try a new shoe.

**By the way, I finally finished the 70.3 training plan. I updated my training page to include it!

This morning I went for a 3-mile run in my new shoes. Newton is built with what they call “Action/Reaction Technology” that is designed to encourage fore-foot striking. It certainly does just that. Everything I read said to tilt slightly forward in your stride and let the shoe work for you.

Having only 3-miles on them I’m not making any promises that I am a full Newton convert, however, I think we just may have a winner ;-)

In the spirit of trying new things I also gave a running skirt from Skirt Sports a try. Running skirts are another thing I’ve been thinking about testing out for a while. I absolutely loved it. This skirt is definitely going to be a staple in my running closet.

I’d say, it was a pretty successful morning as far as trying new gear goes.

Of course, I couldn’t buy myself new toys without picking up something for the Pup.

Yep, that’s Harvey, with his new giant plastic burger.

Have you ever tried Newton running shoes? What is you’re the best workout gear you’ve tried lately?

Welcome Home, Harvey!

In addition to a little race I had this weekend, we also got the news that we were going to be the forever home of a 9-week old puppy.

A few weeks ago, Patrick and I applied with the Florida Poodle Rescue to adopt an adorable poodle puppy. Florida Poodle Rescue is known for their very lengthy and detailed adoption process that includes a reference check, phone interview, home visit and a visit to the foster home of the dog you are applying to adopt. This is part of the reason we selected this rescue, it was obvious just how much they care about the dogs they take in.

We were told a few times during the process not to “get our hopes up” on this particular dog since there was a lot of interest in him. How in the world is one supposed to not get their hopes up with this precious face?

After completing and passing the entire process we went to meet the puppy who was staying about an hour away from us. During the home visit, his foster Mom informed us that he would be neutered in the morning and if we’d like, we could bring him home the next day. After the series of interviews we had been through I really wasn’t expecting to find out on the spot that we had been selected, but we did.

We’ve had such a blast getting him adjusted to his new home. Being raised in such a wonderful foster home through FPR he has already picked up a lot of training. We feel very lucky for that.

Welcome home, Harvey!
